On The Shelf Exclusive interview with Anita Viljoen: December 8 2011

I had the pleasure of visiting with Anita this morning at the Maple Ridge Library. The library has bought 4 copies of her book "Feeders" and they are always out.
Anita was born in South Africa , now calls Maple Ridge home.
In her 39th year she had some troubling dreams about vampires and was told to write them down and when she turned those dreams were turned into her first book "Feeders".

She is a mother, wife, Esthetician and Girl Guide Leader and Author. She also told me she is very meticulous in everything she does from housework to writing.
She  writes mostly late at night when the rest of her family is asleep.
Anita also suffers from dyslexia where words and numbers can be challenging, so for her to be a writer is something I applaud.
Certain words and letters can flip themselves in a persons mind, but more so for people with dyslexia. It was not discovered until high school that Anita has dyslexia.

We took a table and two seats by the window and we had a nice chat, I hope she was as comfortable as I was.

So on to the interview:

Why Vampires? What fascination do you have with them?

I love the folklore of it all, even though allot of it is unbelievable or could not happen. Sometimes fiction stories have non-fiction elements and vice-versa

Do you feel that the "Twilight Series" has hurt or helped the Legacy of the Vampire?

I really think it has helped the genre I read the books when they first came out and quite enjoyed them. They are geared towards young women, but Breaking Dawn was definitely the stronger of the stories.

Did you feel challenged to keep the story going?

I got the opportunity to add new characters to the story and some new vampires. There is a Viper vampire that has snake traits and oily scales, blah kinda creeps me out thinking about it.
Also the true part of the book I did allot of research again for this book almost more than the first book.

Any suggestions for anyone that wants to start writing?

If a good idea comes to you write it down, it may add up to something.

Do you have any favorite authors?

Anne Rice(her earlier books), Dan Brown, Charlene Harris, & Lynsay Sands just to name a few.

Would you like to see your books turned into film?

I would love to have them turned into movies but really have no idea who I would want casted in the roles.

Do you care to share with the readers your plans for the Christmas Holidays?

Yes I don’t object. My husband (Martin) surprised me with a trip back to South Africa to visit my ailing mother for Christmas and my step dad was kind enough to help out.

In closing Anita is planning a book launch and for those of you in the Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows area I will keep you posted she told me she will let me know when it is.

Hybrid Press Release Dec 1, 2011

I would like to take this time to thank Anita for her time on this today and look forward to reading her work. It was a nice visit I will be attending her book launch in the New Year and will get allot of pics for you all.

Thank you for reading this
